Stable Diffusion XL 1.0 (SDXL 1.0): features, use cases and important details

Stable Diffusion XL 1.0, commonly called SDXL 1.0, is Stability AI’s July 2023 text-to-image model. The exact base checkpoint is stabilityai/stable-diffusion-xl-base-1.0, and Stability’s current API documentation still lists the SDXL 1.0 engine as a legacy option.

How SDXL works

SDXL can run as a standalone base model or as part of a two-stage pipeline with the optional refiner. The official model card describes it as a latent diffusion system intended for creative generation, research, design and educational tools.

Current availability and cost

The Stability API lists stable-diffusion-xl-1024-v1-0 and the current pricing page shows SDXL 1.0 from 0.9 credits for standard generation. The model weights are also available for local deployment under the CreativeML Open RAIL++-M license.

Limitations

Stability’s model card notes imperfect photorealism, weak legible text, difficult composition and problems generating faces. SDXL also predates Stability’s newer SD3.5 family, so its main strengths today are compatibility, the mature ecosystem and existing fine-tuned workflows.

Get started

How to use this model

  1. Download the official SDXL 1.0 base checkpoint.
  2. Load it with Diffusers or another supported runtime.
  3. Optionally use the SDXL refiner for a two-stage pipeline.
  4. For hosted use, call the Stability API with the SDXL 1.0 engine.
  5. Review license restrictions and generated outputs before production use.

Pricing

What does it cost?

SDXL 1.0 remains available as a legacy Stability API model from 0.9 credits for standard generation; self-hosted weights have separate infrastructure costs.

Simple summarySelf-hosting uses your own GPU resources. Stability's current pricing page lists SDXL 1.0 API generation from 0.9 credits.

What stands out

  • Large ecosystem
  • Downloadable official weights
  • Still available through Stability API
  • Strong community tooling

Things to consider

  • Legacy generation
  • Weak text rendering compared with newer models
  • Can struggle with composition and faces
Limitations

Important restrictions and trade-offs

  • Model card notes imperfect photorealism, poor legible text and compositional failures
  • Generated people may be malformed
  • Open RAIL license includes use restrictions

Our editorial take

Still useful for compatibility and the mature SDXL ecosystem, but new image projects should compare Stable Diffusion 3.5 and newer Stability services.
