Reasons Why You Should Start Content Creation with Programming
Today, I’m going to share my journey from zero to now in coding — and how content creation gave me an edge in this field.
I’ve been passionate about programming since my 10th standard. I was always curious about how applications work on our smartphones and how everything functions in the software development industry.
After completing my 12th-grade exams, I had a three-month gap before college started. I told my parents about my interest in computer science and my desire to build a career in this field. Thankfully, they supported me and got me admitted into a B.Tech program in Computer Science and Engineering.
Before college began, I decided not to waste those three to four months. Based on the advice of programming influencers I followed on YouTube, I learned that I should focus on mastering a programming language and Data Structures & Algorithms (DSA). I chose to start with Java, and that’s how my programming journey officially began. By the time college started, I had already learned Java, even before reaching the OOPs concepts. At that point, it felt like a huge achievement for me.
Soon after, college started — but then COVID-19 hit, and everything shifted online. The first semester was exciting, especially because we had C programming as a subject. Since I had already learned Java, I didn’t face any difficulty learning C.
However, in the second semester, things got a bit boring. There were no programming subjects, and classes were still online. So, I decided to start a YouTube channel where I could teach programming in my native language, Punjabi. I’ve always had a passion for teaching and explaining concepts. That’s when both my content creation and programming journeys took off.
How Content Creation Helped Me in My Career
As someone who loves to explain concepts, content creation has polished my teaching skills. This ability to teach is something I gained entirely through creating content.
It also gave me the confidence to express my thoughts clearly — a very important skill in development jobs. If you can explain what you’re planning to build, you’re more likely to build something great.
How Content Creation Opened Multiple Career Opportunities
By uploading my lectures on YouTube, my classmates started recognising me. Whenever they needed help understanding a topic, they’d ask me to make a video. I’d record and upload it — and they appreciated my teaching style. That boosted my confidence further.
I also started posting my daily journey and projects on LinkedIn, which is essential for computer science students since most of our work is digital. From LinkedIn, I received an internship offer in my 7th semester, just because of content creation. I was sharing my work on YouTube, LinkedIn, and other platforms, and people started noticing me. My content served as “proof of work,” and that’s how opportunities came my way.
Along with my internship, I also received part-time work creating programming tutorial videos — again, thanks to content creation.
As a computer science student, I don’t always have physical products to show. Our work is digital. That’s why it’s crucial to showcase your skills and journey online. Companies care about your skills, and your projects and content prove that.
If you consistently create content around your skills and projects, you’ll unlock countless opportunities — just like I did.
So in today’s era, start creating content around your work and start building your own personal brand.
