Description

What is Dify?

Dify is a visual AI application builder for creating applications that use language models, tools and your own information. It brings prompts and workflow steps into one place. A common use is retrieval-based answers: the app first finds relevant material, then uses that context to prepare an answer instead of relying only on the model’s general knowledge.

How it helps

As a knowledge-based app platform, Dify can organise documents, model steps and branching logic. Its workflow documentation also includes human approval steps, where a run pauses for a person to respond. This can be useful when an answer needs checking before the process continues. A human-input node still has to be placed and configured properly.

Build around a small knowledge task

Start with a narrow collection of approved material rather than uploading every document the company owns. For a support helper, define five or ten questions it should answer and a few it must hand over. This keeps the first workflow understandable. It also makes it easier to diagnose whether a wrong answer came from missing documents, poor retrieval or the model’s interpretation.

A simple example

For example, build a small support helper in Dify using five approved FAQs. Ask the LLM workflow builder to answer known questions and send an unknown request for review. Check whether the returned answer matches the source and whether the handover actually pauses the workflow. Do this before connecting a live customer channel.

Understand the retrieval step

A knowledge-based app first needs to find relevant material. If it retrieves the wrong passage, a strong language model can still produce a weak answer. Review how documents are prepared and test questions with similar wording. Include an unknown question to check whether the application admits that it lacks support instead of combining unrelated snippets into a confident answer.

Setup and limits

If you want self-hosted AI apps, Dify offers a Community edition alongside cloud plans. This AI workflow platform has licence conditions, and self-hosting still needs a server, updates and backups. Also budget for model API costs. A free application platform does not make an external language model or embedding service free.

Put human input at the correct point

A review step is most useful just before the workflow performs the action that matters. Check the pause, who can respond and what happens after rejection or no response. A node existing on the canvas does not prove it has been connected correctly. Test the full path with a harmless sample before it updates a record, contacts a customer or continues an expensive job.

Dify pricing

Pricing checked on 20 October 2026 · USD unless another currency is stated
Plan / route Monthly or usage price Annual option Included use Extra costs / conditions
Sandbox $0 Not applicable 200 trial message credits; 1 member; 5 apps; 50 knowledge documents Credits are not described here as a monthly refill.
Professional Monthly price not confirmed; check checkout $590/workspace/year (about $49.17/month) 5,000 message credits/month; 3 members; 50 apps Annual equivalent is calculated; external model use can add cost.
Team Monthly price not confirmed; check checkout $1,590/workspace/year ($132.50/month equivalent) 10,000 message credits/month; up to 50 members Storage, documents and trigger limits differ.
Community self-hosted $0 software fee Not applicable Core public-repository features under Dify’s licence Server, maintenance and model/API costs are separate.
Enterprise Custom Contract-dependent Private deployment, governance and support Commercial licence and organisation terms apply.

Annual figures are totals paid for a workspace, not per-user monthly charges. The Community edition has a custom licence; it is not unrestricted Apache-2.0 software.

Compare cloud and self-hosting fairly

Cloud plans bundle managed capacity and have document, storage and trigger allowances. Self-hosting gives more responsibility for infrastructure, updates, backups and model keys. Compare both routes using the same intended workload. Include time spent maintaining the service, not only the software fee. Also review the custom licence before using the community edition in a commercial or multi-tenant arrangement.

Who should use it?

Dify fits builders who want visual control over a model-based application without writing every step from scratch. Start with the Sandbox or an appropriate self-hosted setup, then compare knowledge limits, collaboration and triggers before upgrading. Your document quality and test questions matter as much as the number of workflow nodes.

Common questions

Does a knowledge base prevent invented answers?

No. Retrieval can improve context, but missing or irrelevant material can still lead to an unsupported answer. Keep source references and a clear handover path for questions the approved material does not answer.

Can I self-host without any cost?

The software route can have no licence fee for eligible use, but a server, storage, backups and external models can still cost money. The custom licence also has conditions that need checking for your use case.

Key Features

  • Visual workflows for AI applications and agents.
  • Knowledge preparation and retrieval workflows.
  • Model and tool integrations.
  • Human-input nodes for review steps.
  • Cloud and self-hosted deployment options.
  • Branching logic: combine model steps, conditions and supported tools in a visual application flow.
  • Document preparation: create a searchable knowledge collection rather than relying only on general model knowledge.
  • Retrieval inspection: test which source passages are used before tuning the final answer prompt.
  • Trigger support: current plans include different allowances for scheduled, webhook and plugin events.
  • Application management: plan-specific app, member, storage and log limits support different deployment sizes.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Connects prompts, documents and application logic.
  • Useful for a focused support or internal assistant.
  • Allows a pause for human input.
  • Offers a free cloud evaluation and a self-hosted route.
  • A small knowledge collection makes early testing easier to understand and repeat.
  • Visual logic helps a team discuss where a review or fallback step belongs.
  • Cloud and community routes let builders compare managed service with infrastructure control.
  • Documented allowances make it easier to identify which resource may require an upgrade.

! Weaknesses

  • The Community licence has conditions; it is not unrestricted Apache-2.0.
  • Self-hosting adds maintenance and infrastructure work.
  • Retrieval quality depends on source material and setup.
  • A larger model cannot repair a workflow that retrieves the wrong source passage.
  • Human approval can be bypassed by an incorrectly connected path.
  • Knowledge storage, triggers and model usage can reach limits independently.
  • Commercial hosting or multi-tenant use may require additional licence review.
