Meta has reportedly been granted a patent outlining AI system that could create what it describes as a “digital afterlife” avatars capable of simulating a deceased person’s personality and continuing to interact with friends and family.
The system would analyze years of posts, messages, voice patterns, and digital behavior to generate a conversational AI version of someone who has passed away.
It sounds like science fiction. But the patent suggests the company is thinking seriously about how AI could preserve identity or at least approximate it.
For some, this could feel comforting. For others, unsettling.
